Overview

lasting change happens when communities are informed

Livelihood Protection and Empowerment (LPE)

The well-being of any community is anchored in secure and sustainable livelihoods. In Kwale, this security is under increasing pressure as communities navigate the impacts of mining exploration and operations, the uncertainties of post-mining transition after a decade of large-scale extraction, recurrent droughts, relocations, climate stresses, and shifting economic landscapes. These challenges have left many households vulnerable and unsure of their future.

Grassroots’ Voices works to strengthen community resilience and dignity by promoting equitable, sustainable, and rights-based livelihood strategies. We support skills development, community economic empowerment, and inclusive enterprise models that open opportunities for all. At the same time, we protect and promote traditional livelihoods such as agriculture, fishing, and small-scale trade, which remain the backbone of local economies.

Our approach places special focus on groups that often face exclusion, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities. We ensure they have fair access to skills, resources, and opportunities to build stable incomes and meaningfully participate in economic development.

By connecting communities to information, training, and networks, we support them to adapt, innovate, and navigate emerging challenges.

We also advocate for policies that safeguard economic rights, strengthen access to natural resources, and promote inclusive local development.

Grassroots’ Voices envisions empowered households, stronger community systems, and a vibrant local economy where no one is left behind. Through livelihood protection and empowerment, we are helping communities secure their future and flourish socially and economically.
